University of Oregon Museums. UO's four museums are valuable resources in the sciences and visual arts. The Condon Museum of Geology houses more than 50,000 specimens including vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, fossil plants, and several thousand skulls and skeletons of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The reopened Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is a vibrant museum with 14 galleries and a collection of 12,500 objects. The second largest art museum in Oregon, the Museum features an oustanding collection of American, European, African, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese art, Russian icon paintings, Rodin sculptures, and Northwest art and photography. UO's Museum of Natural and Cultural History unfolds mysteries about Oregon 's natural sciences and human cultures through changing exhibitions. The museum features 500,000 objects, 30,000 of which are displayed, that explore the archaeology and fossil history of Oregon, animals, plants, environmental topics and human cultures. The Oregon State Museum of Anthropology contains archaeological and ethnographic artifacts from Oregon and all over the world. [Top] UO - Science & Arts. The university's science departments receive national attention for their work in such areas as computer science, genetics, materials, optics, and neuroscience. Research facilities and laboratory courses offer UO students experience with electron microscopes and microprobes, advanced optical microscopy, seismic array, and atomic absorption and emissions. The Pine Mountain Observatory consists of three Cassegrain reflecting telescopes with mirrors of 15", 24", and 32" diameters for astronomy education and research. UO offers three performing arts theaters, a scene shop, costume and lighting facilities, and a 550-seat concert hall. University of Oregon Sport and Ducks. The awesome 128,000 square-foot Student Recreation and Fitness Center includes indoor multi-purpose courts, an indoor track, expanded weight training and fitness facilities, a rock-climbing wall, strength and fitness areas, two swimming pools, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, volleyball courts, badminton courts, outdoor and covered tennis courts. ESPN's Top 10 Intimidating Stadiums, Autzen Stadium is a legendary home of the Oregon Ducks football team. Up to 54,000 fans attend every UO home game at the most feared stadium in the Pac-10 Conference. Autzen Stadium's $80-million renovation added 32 luxury suites and two private clubs. Hayward Field is one of the world's most famous track-and-field stadiums. Built in 1919 and named for UO Coach Bill Hayward - the “father of OU track” - the 10,000 capacity facility has hosted 3 Olympic Trials, 9 NCAA championship, 4 National Pro Meets, and the USA Outdoor Track-and-Field Championships. Every May, the stadium hosts the IAAF Grand Prix Prefontaine Classic, the premiere track-and-field meet in the US. Built in 1926, McArthur Court is U of O's premier basketball facility.
